History

Through our history curriculum we aim to instil in the children a curiosity and understanding of events, places and people from the past. Across the school, we aim to study a range of time periods from both British and world history to develop an interest and understanding of the past and of human achievements.  Learning about historical figures and events in the history of Britain and of the wider world, will help them to understand how generations have influenced one another and to think about the values we hold in our society today.

How our history curriculum is implemented:

We use a variety of teaching and learning styles in our history lessons:

  • They have access to, and are able to handle artefacts
  • They go on visits to museums and places of interest
  • They have access to secondary sources such as books and photographs
  • Visitors talk about personal experiences of the past
  • They listen to and interact with stories from the past
  • They undertake fieldwork by interviewing family and older friends about changes in their own and other people’s lives
  • They use drama and dance to act out historical events
  • They are shown, or use independently, resources from the internet, CD ROMs and videos
  • They are able to use non-fiction books for research
  • They are provided with opportunities to work independently or collaboratively, to ask as well as answer historical questions.

Across Key Stages 1 and 2, the focus for our history study is usually the driver for our topic for the half-term or term with cross-curricular links to other subjects being found to further enhance the learning experience and pupils’ understanding. Our long-term overview for history ensures that the National Curriculum is covered across our year groups with a two-year rolling programme for Early Years, Key Stage 1 and year 3 and a three-year rolling programme for years 4, 5 and 6.
