Physical Education

Our aims at Cartmel

Here at Cartmel we believe that PE and sport are an important part of our children’s lives. PE nurtures children’s attitudes towards fitness, wellbeing and a healthy lifestyle. We understand how important children and young people’s physical health and emotional well-being is and the relationship between these and academic achievement. We believe PE supports learning across the curriculum and it equips children with the skills they need in life beyond school. PE aids self-discipline and the understanding that in order to be successful you have to put in the effort and persevere. We encourage the importance of taking part as well as healthy competition. We support our children to enjoy PE and pride ourselves on embedding the key values of fairness and respect. Children who show good sportsmanship and are appreciative and celebratory of their individual, teams or others efforts and achievements is very important to us at Cartmel.

How we implement PE

In order for us to follow through with our aims we ensure we offer a wide range of sport specific coaches, alongside school staff, that aim to provide high quality PE and active experiences. This provides all our children with an opportunity to take part, experience success and evaluate their performances. At Cartmel children take part in weekly PE sessions with teachers and coaches that cover a variety of sports, outdoor learning, gymnastics and dance. This not only supports the children progress in specific sports but improves the key skills of throwing, catching, kicking for example, as we practise the fundamentals through skill specific sessions.  The children also have a yearly swimming block.

Furthermore, we are part of a local cluster consisting of 6 other schools. Our children participate in a range of friendly festivals, mass participation events and also compete more competitively as an individual or part of a team. This happens all throughout the year. We ensure that we offer clubs during the year as an extra-curricular option to support health and wellbeing, social development and allow all children to try new sports and develop new interests.

The impact on our children

Through underpinning the key skills and values of PE we aim to enhance children’s health, fitness and wellbeing with our inclusive teaching approach. We hope to develop positive attitudes to physical activity and encourage the children to adopt an active and healthy lifestyle. We want children to leave Cartmel as physically confident, understanding the importance of working hard and striving for success, alongside working as a team. We believe this sets them in good stead for the future and gives them key life skills that support them in taking ownership of their own health and wellbeing, living a more happy and healthy lifestyle.
